Chiang Rai travel guide

Guide me through Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai is the northernmost province of Thailand that offers a diverse range of attractions. The province is filled with a relaxing atmosphere, delicious local cuisine, and rich culture. Despite its beautiful sights and vibrant markets, the city has a more down-to-earth and less bustling vibe compared to its sister town, Chiang Mai.

Famous temples in Chiang Rai

Famous temples
The most well-known attraction in the area is Wat Rong Khun, also called the White Temple. To avoid the tourist crowds, it’s best to arrive early before the tour buses. You can get there by local bus or tuk-tuk. However, there are more attractions to explore in and around Chiang Rai City.

Another popular spot is the Blue Temple or Wat Rong Seur Ten. This temple, which opened in 2016, is mainly for tourists and is more of an art piece than a traditional pagoda. It’s quite stunning and offers great photo opportunities.

The Black House, or Baan Dam, is another unique attraction located just a short drive outside the city. This eclectic creation by a renowned national artist acts as a museum, art studio, and traditional house. It’s definitely worth a visit and provides a glimpse of something you don’t see every day in Thailand. Many tuk-tuk drivers provide tours to the White, Blue, and Black Temples, but make sure to negotiate a fair price. Alternatively, you can rent a scooter and explore the main attractions on your own.

If you have a scooter or time to spare for an additional temple outside the city, consider visiting Wat Huay Pla Kang. In the old town, the Ming Muang Temple near the clock tower is also a worthwhile visit.

When in Chiang Rai, be sure to explore beyond the main attractions. Head to the city center, visit some temples and take in the city’s sights. In addition to the Mengrai Statue and the Golden Clock Tower, which plays music every night at 7, 8, and 9 PM, there are other points of interest such as the Hill Tribe Museum and the Mae Fah Luang Art & Culture Park.

If you’re interested in exploring the area around Chiang Rai, you can take a leisurely stroll through Singha Park or visit Mae Sai-Tham Luang Cave. If you’re visiting in January, don’t miss the Flower Festival on Wisetwiang Road where you can admire the beautiful arrangement of tulips and water lilies in the flowerbeds.

In summary, Chiang Rai is a city that offers more than just the famous White Temple. Stay a few days to immerse yourself in the local lifestyle and explore all that the city has to offer.
