Nan travel guide

Guide me through Nan

Once an independent kingdom, Nan is now a beautiful provincial capital in the north of Thailand. It’s a fantastic place to experience authentic Thai culture and dive into the rich history of the country by visiting unique temples and the National Museum. The city is rather off the beaten path, and not many tourists find themselves here, which makes Nan even more special and beautiful. Give it a shot and enjoy the local and calm atmosphere.

Nan's Temples

One of the most famous pagodas is Wat Phra That Khao Noi, featuring a 9-meter (29.5 feet) golden Buddha Statue that overlooks the valley and the surrounding landscape. The temple and the view are not only stunning but also make it one of the most picturesque locations in northern Thailand.

Visiting the temple in the early morning allows you to witness the sunrise above the mountains, offering a truly memorable experience and fantastic photo opportunities.

If you prefer a leisurely breakfast and want to explore the city later, the temple is also impressive during the day and offers the chance to watch the sunset from the viewpoint.

In addition to the famous pagoda, it’s worthwhile to visit at least two other temples in the city: the white Wat Ming Muang and the golden Wat Sri Pantheon. Although you may have seen many temples in Thailand, these are unique and definitely worth exploring.

more to explore

The National Museum, which was once a palace, now houses important artifacts such as a black elephant tusk. The tusk is 97 cm (38.2 inches) long, weighs 18 kg (almost 40 lbs), and holds great historical significance for the city of Nan.

The provincial capital is also popular among sports enthusiasts due to its pristine trekking areas and rafting spots. You can hire a tour guide or explore Doi Phukha National Park on your own. The trails are of medium difficulty, and the best time to visit is between October and January, after the rainy season. Otherwise, the weather can get very hot. Don’t miss the chance to explore the caves in Tham Pha Tub Forest Park, located just outside the city.

After a long day of discovering Nan, stroll around the night market or across the buzzing Walking Street and grab a cold beer to let the evening fade away.
