Weekend trips.
Holidays.
A one-month trip.
Long-term travel.
Ever since I can remember, traveling has been my passion. I spend the money I earn on the next flight, the next adventure. My friend asked me what I was escaping from. She shares the same opinion as my parents.
There is the perception that travelers who travel as often or as long as possible escape reality, escape normal life, escape adulthood, responsibility, and problems.
We step out of line, we do not form part of society, we do not follow the system. We are not normal.
And I agree.
So do we escape? Undoubtedly, we do!
We escape society’s idea of a normal life to live the life we choose. And while we are running, we are running towards everything.
Towards life in all its beauty and diversity.
Towards love and education.
Towards enjoying life to the fullest.
Towards freedom.
We call ourselves vagabonds, nomads, travelers, and wanderers. But no matter what name we prefer, we do the same. We prioritize. Don’t get us wrong. We do not live unrealistic lives, but we do set priorities. And we set our priorities differently than most of society.
We prioritize
The world over settling.
Minimalism over possessions.
Freedom over comfort.
Flexibility over a safe 9 to 5 job.
That’s why we do not seem normal to most people. Because most people share a different concept of happiness.
So what is it that we love so much about traveling?
We love breathing in life and enjoying what truly brings value to it – a sunset, a conversation, nature.
We love the urge to explore the wonders of the world and create memories that last a lifetime.
We love sharing with and learning from other people.
We love changing our perspective, growing gratitude, and finding confidence in ourselves.
Travel is a feeling. An exhilarating feeling that ignites curiosity and sparks exploration. It unleashes this vibrant flow of energy and creativity within you, drawn from immersing yourself into a new culture, listening to exotic music, and savoring the flavors of the world.
When I travel, I go out there, I pursue my dreams, live by my values, educate myself, and show courage. And while doing so, I experience something infinitely powerful and nourishing for the soul. Here, at that exact point, I face the real problems that arise when I leave my comfort zone. And in the process, I learn something about life. That’s what running towards life has taught me.
Next time someone asks me if I am escaping, I will respond with unwavering conviction:
Yes, I do! And this is exactly the way I want to live my life.
When will you escape?
